Title Research

Title Research

These are some of the fonts that I had in mind now we are sorting out our title, i have researched five of the most popular fonts.
The first font was Caslon Pro I didn't really like it because it wasn't that eye catching. It was also very plain. The second font was Neuva STD, it is very boring and plain. It is only in caps it isn't anything special. The third title was Brush Script Std its not bold enough, so it wont catch peoples eyes as they walk past or see it on TV they wont be intrigued to go and see the film. The fourth title is the one that we are going to use in the opening two minutes of our film, the reason that we are going to use this Kaiti is because it is different and unique. The last font is the OCR Extended the reason that we aren't going to use this one is because it isn't very eye catching and it is boring due to the fact that people has seen the title font loads of times before.

Titles Research

We are going to opt for white titles on a black background because this is what is popular within our genre today.

In the 1980s horror films and thrillers became very popular and the titles used to be quite over the top - which people associate with films that were often quite gory.

The titles below are not the style we are going to use because they are more on how they used to look. The effect that we want to use is a title like you would see in horror films today. We don't like these because of the fact that they are old fashioned.

The title for the Amityville horror is more like the titles we want to use.  Today horror films tend to use white titles on a dark background and we want to do something similar because we want people to think our film is new and not old fashioned.

Soundtrack Research

The use of sound and music is going to be very important to us as we intend to use it in order to create tension in our film.  In our film there is going to be a scary man who is a threat to some young girls and the use of music, or discordant sound, will make this happen.  In the Insidious scene there is a part where the young girls internet goes down and she starts to hear creaking along the floor, as she is looking around for some reassurance that she is safe, suddenly, she sees a dark figure hiding behind the curtain. The music that is playing in the background creates a unsettled and tense scene.
1:06 is when the tense music begins.

In Luther they use dragged note to create drama and suspension for the audience. By dragging the note on it makes the audience think that maybe she is going to live and kill the man but also makes you double think yourself and make you think that maybe it will all go wrong and she will die. The delayed music sets the scene as dramatic and dangerous.
1:50 is when the tense music starts.

Location Research

This is one of our key locations for our project - the River Mole bridge in Leatherhead.  One of the reasons we think this is a really good location is because bridges are normally spooky and mysterious. People usually go to bridges to hide from something or someone. In most fairy tales that include a bride there is either a troll or monster hiding under it but our horror movie isn’t a fairy tale that has a cartoon character hiding under it, it will have a man standing there. The horror film is based on things that could happen at any time of the day and to anyone.

Mood Board

This is mine and my groups mood board. The mood board represents everything that is going to be in the opening two mins of our film. The mood board also shows the genre of the film and what target audience the film is aimed at.

 Initial Ideas

Coming Home for Christmas

One of my favourite camera shots is when the two little sisters are making snow angles on the ground and the camera slowly starts to zoom in to the little girls. This is effective because it shows that the two girls are going to be the main characters, it also makes the audience feel like they have more power over them as they feel like they are higher than the two girls. This camera shot also makes the two girls look innocent. One of my favourite camera shot from the film Coming home for Christmas is when the couple is standing looking up at the waterfall. This is effective because the waterfall is peace full place. The waterfall is also a romantic place this shows the audience that they are in love.
There is a piano playing in the background, there is also a narrator speaking over the top. This is effective because it makes the audience listen to the words that's being said, it makes the think about their family and how what is being said links to their life. As one of the main is swinging on her childhood swing the music began to get faster this shows that the character is happy which makes the audience feel happy as well.
The pace of editing isn't that fast. This is effective because it gives the audience a chance to take in the scenery of the nature that the scene is set in. The slow paced editing is also effective because you get to see everyone in the film admire what is around them which makes the audience think if they have taken for granted what they have as they are trying to do everything that they can to make their parents marriage work.
The costumes in Coming Home for Christmas is very warm and up beat, this lets the audience know that the setting of the scene is cold. Towards the middle of the trailer you see a man wearing military cloths, this is effective because people from the military are very family orientated and care about those around them. This is effective because the film is about bring family together and people that have been in the military are very respectful and will do anything to keep a family together, this is effective because although they are using stereotypes of a military man/woman they are using the best stereotypes of a military man/woman.
From the trailer of Coming Home for Christmas we learn that the storyline is about trying to get a family back together again and even going to the extreme to having Christmas at their childhood house. In the progress one of the main characters find true love whilst trying to o back to where there parents was in love but will the two sisters plans work.
The titles are white Christmassy writing on a green background with old starts, this is effective because it shows the audience that it is a Christmas. The writing isn't about the actors its about the film about the brining together of the family. At the end of the trailer they have the title come up in Christmassy writing in yellow, the background is of the families hows where they are going to have the Christmas to bring their family together.

Our Pitch for Our Film Idea

Our film is about a group of girls who are coming home from a day out shopping and one of them decides to walk along the barrier of the bridge. She looks over and sees someone lying on the floor under the bridge.  The girls drop their bags and run down to the girl to see if she is okay and as they get down to the bridge where the girl they realise the girl is dead and there is a man watching,  The man then slowly walks out with his hooded jumper on - wearing dark clothing - and you can hear the crunching of the leaves under his feet.  The girls back up and run with one falling over.  As she looks behind her he is there and she screams.

The film would be a psychological thriller about a serial killer and in the end a detective would solve the crimes and a female character, in the nick of time which is a key convention.

White House Down

A lot of the camera shots are of low angle shots this makes the audience feel like the character has more power over them. Another camera shot that I really like is the medium shot that slowly turned into a long shot, of when the helicopter's fly over the pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and you can see the choppers separating the water.
In the first scene the music starts of fast but quite and gradually gets faster and louder, this is effective because the helicopters are flying first thing in the morning and the world hasn't quite woken-up yet but as the sun starts to rise the music starts to get louder. At the very beginning you hear an alarm to wake up the little girl that is excited about seeing the helicopter's pass, as the picture begins to form and the alarm goes of its almost like we are being awoken a long with the little girl.
The pace of editing is slow as they show the President flying over important buildings. This is effective because it makes the audience think on where he is going and why he is important.
At the very beginning you see a little girl in her pajamas which shows that it is early in the morning. When the camera is looking into the helicopter it makes the audience feel like they are looking into the audience. When we are looking into the audience you can see the President sitting looking back at you in a suite and tie, this suggests that he likes to be well dressed and presentable.
During the first scene you can tell that the president is going to be one of the main characters, you can tell this by the fact that he had a close up and the cameras was on the helicopters the hole time. Another main character is the little girl you know this due to the fact that the camera was really interested on what she was doing.
At the very beginning they use white writing in capitals on a black background, this is effective because they stand out and they are bold so it makes the writing catch your eye.
We can tell that one of the genres is drama by the fact that the music in the beginning was very dramatic. you can't tell that the other two genres are action and thriller through the first scene.

Southpaw

The camera shots that is most effective are the close up's of one of Billy Hope's (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) assistance wrapping up his hand's ready for the bi fight. when they are close up on his hands you can really see the concentration and determination in his face.
In the first scene Billy is listening to upbeat fast music to put him in a upbeat and determined mind set, this makes the audience feels like they are in Billy's head. When the music from the head phones got quitter you could start to hear the sounds surrounding him, his friends talking, his manager on the phone, you could also hear the sound of the tape unravelling as his assistance wrapped it around Billy's hand.
The pace of editing is slow as the camera was mainly on the main character Billy as he was getting ready for the fight. The camera also shown Billy's friends as they watched as each of them held one of Billy's winning belts from previous fights.
The main character Billy was wearing boxing shorts and boxing gloves, this shows the audience that Billy the main character is a boxer, they can tell by what he was wearing. His friends was wearing what looked like track suite bottoms and a white t-shirt with a white bomber jacket over the top, the bomber jacket had three white stripes down each arm.
From the first scene we find out that the storyline is about a boxer and his carer. We also find out that Billy has wife and a daughter, we find this out to the fact that his wife Maureen ( played by Rachel McAdams) was on the phone to there daughter as she walked into the changing room.
We know that one of the genres is sports, we know this due to the fact that boxing is a sport. the other genre is action you cant really tell this from the beginning scene but as the film goes on you can begin to tell that the other genre is action.

Tracers

My favourite camera shot from the beginning scene of Tracers is when the four free runners are going from building to building and the camera is attached to one of them so as they are jumping over buildings it makes you feel like you are part of it with them. Another one of my favourite camera shots is when Cam (played by Taylor Lautner) is riding through the streets on his bikes but they kept on cutting to the free runners, this is effective because it makes you think that maybe at first they are racing each other.
In the first scene the music is really up beat, fast and accelerated to show that the free runners are trying to get away from something (if you have watched the film then you will know that they are thieves that use free running as a way of getting away from the crime). Cam is a bike messenger that is in a hurry to deliver a message so that he can finish, but you wouldn't think that's all, by the cuts from both of the scenes you would also think that they are all in a rush to meet each other.
Tracers uses fast pace editing to bring the effect of everyone is in a rush to get somewhere which makes the audience think, where are they in a rush to get to?
Cam (Taylor Lautner) is wearing sports wear, this show that Cam is very sporty and athletic, which fits in with the film as the film is based on running and using different skills to get away from the crime that they have committed. In the beginning scene the free runners are dressed in track suit bottoms and a hoodie with their hoods up this suggests that they trying to hide their faces from someone so they wont get caught and so when they need to they can suddenly blend in with the crowd.
From the beginning scene you can tell that the storyline is going to be based on Cam meeting Nikki (played by Marie Avgeropoulos) when she is running from the police they bump into each other, you can see by Taylors facial extractions that he wasn't going to stop until he found her again and they we're together.
The title for Tracers is effective because it's nothing big its just Tracers on a black background for a couple of seconds then gets bigger suggesting that anything can start of small and can get as big as they like. Just like Cam he started of a bike messenger then ended up doing more in his life and he found true love.
We know that the genre of Tracers is action through all of the stunts and chasing in the first scene. You can also tell that its a crime themed film when the police was coming towards Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos) when Cam feel on top of her and the camera was pointing towards the police coming towards them. The last genre is drama but you can't really tell this until the second scene.

The Lion King

In the first scene of The Lion King there is loads of great camera angles. One of the camera shots is at the very beginning when it shows the sun coming up this is effective because it shows a new beginning. Although it is an animated film I think that they have used a good range of camera angles. Another camera angle that stands out to me is when the monkey holds Simba up and the camera is placed in a low angled shot, the effect of this is to show that they have more power over the audience.
Image result for the lion king

The music in The Lion King is effective because when the music starts its made of pure vocal harmony's then the song gradually brings in musical instruments showing that everything starts of little and slowly grows.
They have a lot of close ups of different animals in there habitats. This is effective because its like everything is just waking up and getting ready to start a new day. Towards the end of the scene they use a close up to show all of the different animals together as one to show that even though they are all different and have different parts on the food chain they work together to go and see an important moment in Simba's life.
In the beginning scene you can tell that the main part of the storyline is about new life and new beginnings. We know that its a kids animation film by the happy beginning you can tell this by the peaceful settings as the sun started rising, as the beginning scene continued you can see lots of animals happily coming together as one.

Tuesday 11 October 2016

This is my mind map of conventions of a romantic comedy. This shows all of the typical conventions of a romantic comedy film. For example Bridget Jones Diary, her dad is sweet and kind of stupid but caring, her mum is always trying to set her up with people. The person Bridget has a crush on is the inappropriate romance of the film but she ends up with the quite person that is always in the back ground.

Tuesday 4 October 2016

There is a really effective long shot art he beginning of a city or town with smoke coming out of it - we know there's trouble there.  Then the tanks start rolling in - this makes us think there is about to be a battle, which is what you expect from an action film.We then cut to a close up of a man with a beard, we know he will be important to the story.
In the opening scene of Expendables 2 they use a violin to create a setting of war. They do this by using a high frequency of the violin and they make it fast. As they start shooting they stop the violin and just have yelling and gun shots as the sound to make the mood of the setting war and determination to do anything to get what they need.
In Expendables 2 they use army wear for example a gun prof vest and a pair of trousers with lots of pockets to keep maps, spare bullets, communication devices and more to show that they are the heroes as they are prepared for war, for the bad guys they have dressed them up in everyday clothing like jeans and a shirt so they aren't prepared for a war.
The story line of Expendables 2 is that the good guys (you know if they are good cause they will have the most close ups) are tying to get one of their friends back from the bad guys (you will know that they are bad guys to the fact that they will look scruffy).
You know that it is a action film through all of the gun scenes and the fight scenes, you can also tell that its an action film through all of the war vehicles and excreta.

The film San Andreas is a fantastic film that constantly has you on the edge of your seat. At the beginning of the film its very much a normal everyday life setting. The main character's of this film are Blake (Alexandra Daddario), Ollie (Art Parkinson), Ben (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), Raymond/Ray (Dwayne Johnson), Emma (Carla Gugion), Dr Lawrence Hayes (Paul Giamatti), Serena (Archie Panjabi), Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd).
San Andreas (2015) Poster
This film is not what you expect. Its an amazing film about parents trying to save their last daughter, they had two daughters but one daughter drowned when they was on a family canoe and she fell in the river and drowned.
At the beginning Ray and his team of fire and rescue save a girl from her car on the side of a cliff. Whilst Emma and Blake are at Daniel's house. The parents are on a mission to get Blake, Ben and Ollie to safety and away from danger. Scientist try to show everyone that there is going to be an earthquake but no one would listen to them. But when the first couple of little earthquakes end people begin to listen as the scientist show everyone that their is going to be on massive earthquake yet to come.
The genre of San Andreas are action, adventure and drama, with the mix of the three genres makes the film even better, and the anticipation of not knowing what's going to happen next makes the hair on the back of your neck stand.

Friday 9 September 2016

My favourite trailer for a new film has to be Kidnap. The trailer for Kidnap is good as it made me really think about what's going to happen next. Also I like how they have put a question at the end of the trailer.
I like how they have put dramatic music over the top of a serious part of the trailer so you can tell by the music that the mum is scared and worried about what is going to happen to her son Frankie. The music really shows what genre the film is as it has dramatic and fast music. At the beginning of the trailer they use up beat, happy and a slow song at the beginning to show the characters feelings, as they are happy.

I also like that they have put a question at the end of the trailer. I also like how they have used a scene of the film to bring in the title, they used her swinging a pipe to dramatically make the screen black and bring the title in. The title was in large, bold and red writing to make the title stick out and so you remember it.
I like how they have put her speaking some of her lines over the top of a scene of her holding on to the car. They have also put her talking over the top of a scene, in this seen the mum is in a car chase, she is chasing the car that her son is in which makes it dramatic as you know that she will do anything to get her son back.
The genre of this film is action and thriller. The mix of the two genres make the film exciting as you don't know what is going to happen next.

My favourite kids film of all time has to be Toy Story. Toy Story is my favourite film as Jessie is an independent and brave character. From a very young age I had been trying to be what the stereotype of a girl, so dresses and pink bows. I then watched Toy Story and Jessie showed me that it doesn't matter what other people think of you as long as your happy with who you are. Jessie wasn't anything like the stereotype of a girl she was bubbly and loud, she wore trousers and a hat instead of a dress and a bow. Jessie showed me that its okay to be different.

My favourite director's are Andrew Standon and Lee Unkrich. They are my favorite because the created Finding Nemo which inspired me to go on adventures no matter how big or small i am. Also that i can do anything as long as i put my mind to it.

My favourite genre's are crime and action because you never know what is going to happen next as it is always something new. I also like comedy because even in a bad situation in a film they can make it funny just by adding comedy for example identity thief as even though it is a bad situation they mad it funny by the connection that the two characters have with one another.

I am looking forward to seeing Kudo and The Two Strings because it is about a little boy that doesn't think that he can do something but with a bit of help he is capable of great things.

The last film that i watched was Home. I like the film Home because it is funny and it shows that with some help you can fit in anywhere, the main character Oh isn't very popular with the others but when he lands on Earth he meets a young girl. She thinks that he is just like all of the others but she took a chance and trusted him and in the end they became really good friends as Oh helped the little girl find her mum.
